Modular Couch Design + Build
This passion project explores furniture as a product design problem, balancing form, function, and lived experience. I designed and built a modular, low-profile couch inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian principles, focusing on adaptability, movement, and longevity. From early sketches and 3D modeling to hands-on construction and upholstery, the project reflects my interest in intentional design, material exploration, and learning through making.

Making Things > Buying Things
This project began as a design exercise and quickly became a one-day build. I wanted a couch that supported the way we actually live, not just how furniture is typically sold. Inspired by Japanese and Scandinavian design principles, I focused on simplicity, warmth, and adaptability.
I designed the couch to be modular and low-profile, with integrated storage and the ability to reconfigure or move it in units rather than as a single heavy piece. The cushions convert into an extra-long twin sleeping surface, allowing the couch to double as guest accommodation without additional furniture.
The process was design-led from the start. I explored proportions, joinery, and ergonomics through extensive sketching and 3D modeling in SketchUp before building. Material choices and construction were intentionally minimal, prioritizing clarity of form, functionality, and longevity. I also upholstered the cushions myself, gaining hands-on insight into material behavior, fabric tension, and wear over time.
Beyond function, the couch reflects a broader interest in designing for movement and longevity. The lower seating height was a deliberate decision, informed by research around mobility and aging, reinforcing the idea that everyday objects can quietly encourage healthier habits.
This project sits at the intersection of design thinking and making. It reinforced my belief that good design is not only about aesthetics or polish, but about intention, iteration, and learning through doing.
